FASHION . ARCHITECTURE . TEXTILES PROJECT: DENSITY

During our last week of university, before the Christmas holidays,
we got the amazing opportunity to work with other students from Architecture
and Textiles. On Monday afternoon of the 11th December, we had our
lecture on the project and were each given a word to create an outcome from.
After the lecture and briefing on, we all parted ways into our groups to start
researching our word, which was Density. As a group, we started to think what
the meaning of Density could be. We created a mind map with various branches of
where we could go with this word and came up with meanings such as:
o
FABRICS - WHAT PEOPLE ARE WEARING, LAYERS, WINTER, THICKNESS OF
FIBRES.
o
PEOPLE - MOST POPULATED STREET IN POOLE.
o
BUILDINGS - DENSITY OF NATURAL ENVIRONMENT VS ARCHITECTURE
DENISTY.
o
ANCHOR - UNDER WATER, HARBOUR, FISHING BOATS, POLLUTED WATER,
SINKING.
o
COLOURS - DARK COLOURS.
o
VOLUME - WATER, BRICKS.
o
WEIGHT - PULLS DOWN, GRAVITY.
o
CLOSENESS - CROWDED, DENISTY OF PEOPLE.
o
LAYERING MATERIALS - TRACING PEOPLE, SCRAP FABRIC
L LIGHT,
SHADOWS, CONTRAST.
We decided to
go to Poole the following day to continue our research and gather first hand
imagery for our outcome. Once we all met in Poole on Tuesday, we decided to
take photos of whatever we thought was interesting and something we could use
to develop the outcome. Looking at density from all angels in Architecture; how
the bricks were stacked, how close together each building was etc. I took a few
photos of the stones on the floor and how they were placed together. We also
found ropes at the docks, which were very tightly knitted together,
demonstrating a form of density. After we had gathered all the photos we
wanted, we then made our way back to the bus stops to head back to uni. On our
way back, we were caught at the level crossing barriers. It became very crowded
with all the people waiting, so a few of us ran up the bridge to the top, and
once the level crossing barriers opened, we managed to get quite a few photos
demonstrating density in crowds. We decided that evening we would all take a
photo and create a textile piece each. Once we all created a piece, we sewed
them all together by hand the following day, to create our final wall hanging
I think
overall the F.A.T. Project was very successful in the fact that we got to meet
other students and collaborate with them. It was also very interesting to see
how we’d all work together, as we had never before. I think we created
something that combined each course very well, we all got to show our creative
sides and learn new things from each other.
